With competition for accountancy jobs high, putting together a good Curriculum Vitae is imperative if you want to get noticed. It is worth taking some time over it – a quick half an hour in your lunch break is not good enough – the effort you put into producing your CV will reap you rewards in the long term.
If you are already working in accountancy and looking for that next job, then things to put on your CV should include evidence of producing forecasts, setting budgets, management skills, leadership skills, numerical ability, and knowledge of compliance procedures, amongst other things.
If you are putting together your first CV after leaving school or university then you will not be able to provide evidence of accountancy skills – in this scenario you will need to think of things you have done which will make employers feel you possess the qualities to make a good accountant. These could include activities or hobbies you have undertaken or any work experience you have which shows you have the relevant skills for the job – perhaps you have worked as a cashier (shows a level of numerical skills), been a member of a chess club (shows analytical skills) etc. You need to think outside the box a little when you have little or no actual work experience to go on.
Employers often complain that candidates do not list their achievements as part of their CV, so doing this could make yours stand out. Think about ways you have helped bring about positive change in companies you have worked for, for example, perhaps you have been instrumental in suggesting and helping to implement a new system of working or a new software accounting system in order to achieve better practice. What potential employers love to see on a CV is evidence of your achievements.
CV’s need to be succinct preferably limited to two sides of A4 and clearly presented in a logical way. If you are really struggling to produce a good CV it might be worthwhile asking for help – many recruitment agencies will help candidates to produce professional focused CVs and there are companies who will offer to do the work for you (for a fee).
